World of Warcraft – Item Upgrading Upgrades to items allow players to increase the gear score of an item to 700 and also add an additional perk. The Champion Leathers, for example, can be upgraded to a +5 defense rating, which allows you to keep up in frigid conditions with a large number of foes. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other hand, can be upgraded as high as +20 defense so that you can survive a raid with your friends. You can't upgrade your armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior then you should concentrate on upgrading your armor to increase physical strength or the power of spells.
